Lion's Rock

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is popularly connected to the Ramayana through local legends and modern Ramayana tourism traditions. Some believe that Sigiriya may have once been associated with King Ravana as a royal fortress, palace, or strategic observation point within the ancient kingdom of Lanka. Its massive rock formation, strong natural defenses, caves, and commanding views have led many to imagine it as a place suitable for Ravana’s rule.

However, there is no archaeological or historical evidence directly linking Sigiriya to the Ramayana period. The existing fortress and palace complex were historically built in the 5th century CE by King Kashyapa I, long after the traditional era of the Ramayana. Even so, Sigiriya continues to be included in Sri Lanka’s Ramayana Trail because of its legendary atmosphere and the enduring folklore surrounding Ravana and ancient Lanka.
